The car pulled up as lightning flashed through the sky. A huge boom of thunder followed. Our two cats peeped out from under the porch, eyes wide with panic. One ran underneath the car, the other leaped onto the porch and ran toward the front door. Lightning and thunder continued and the cats could not find a place to rest. With every pop, they scurried; and when the fat rain started, they both disappeared under the porch again.
I sat on the porch swing and enjoyed the cool air the thunderstorm brought with it. My husband plopped into the rocking chair and my kids joined me on the swing. We laughed and talked as if nothing was going on around us.
It made me think about Jesus on the boat with his disciples. The storm raged and Jesus slept. He knew his Father controlled the winds and waves. While the disciples were freaked out by the thunder, Jesus wasn’t. He rested peacefully.
Storms will come. Lightning will pop. Thunder will boom. But I know a Savior who is the master over every storm that could come into our lives. Divorce. Sickness. Death. Addiction. No matter the storm, none of it surprises Jesus. He’s gone before, been behind, and is with us now. If he can experience peace in the middle of a scary storm, he can help us experience that same kind of peace through his Holy Spirit living inside the hearts of his children.
Are you freaked out by the thunder? Or will you rest in his peace through the storm?
