Fighting Through the Wind
One of the highlights of the recent hurricane was hanging out in the living room with my kids. We laughed, talked, read books, camped out on the couches and had the best time together. The heartiest guffaw happened early Monday morning when the winds picked up.
We were in the living room eating breakfast, the wind was howling. I noticed the hummingbird feeder still on it’s hook and made a mental note to bring it in the next time there was a break in the rain. But then, a little hummer appeared. He fought hard against the wind and finally made it to the feeder. Even in the storm, the little guy had to find food to consume.
Several times throughout the day, we watched this little guy brave the wind. Sometimes he’d blow away with a huge gust, but soon he’d fight his way back to his spot at the feeder. While I watched this hummingbird fight against seemingly impossible odds, it made me realize that with the right determination, anything is possible.
This year at Madison County Central School, each staff member was challenged to come up with a word for the year. As I have run into people who work there and been out there helping coordinate volunteer efforts, I’ve learned many of the words. Motivation. Determination. Inspiration. These are just a few of the words I’ve heard, each shared with excitement and hope. Big things can happen when these little hummers fight hard through the storm.
How about you? Are you fighting hard to make a difference? To get fed? To grow, no matter what? Think about this little hummingbird and do whatever it takes to keep pushing forward, no matter what winds blow your way. And while you’re at it, find a place to make a difference. Reach out, I can help you find your place in the community.
