Mama, Do You Need Some Attention?

“Mama, do you need some attention?” my youngest asked me. I wiped the tears from my cheeks and pulled him into my lap.

“I sure do. What kind of attention do you think I need?”

“Hmm,” I could see the wheels turning as I regained my composure, “Let’s sing,” he said. After a few minutes of the two of us belting out music at the top of our lungs, a big smile spread across my face. My sweet little boy had no idea how much joy he brought to my hurting heart.

At church, a special lady took the time to find me and talk. Before I knew it, she had me in one of those full body hugs, you know, the ones that mamas and grandmas give. I buried my head in her shoulder as she whispered encouragement in my ear. The tears slipped down my face. Knowing that she cares for me and is praying means so much. That sweet lady had no idea how much peace she brought to my weary heart.

A wonderful friend joined me for a night out over the weekend. We talked about everything, never had a dull moment, and made some good memories. There were several times when we literally laughed until we cried. That sweet friend probably had no idea how much hope she brought to my heavy heart.

Some other friends came over to work with us on the house project. They helped us get way more done than we could ever have imagined. We laughed, joked, and just enjoyed each other. Those friends have no idea how much encouragement they brought to our tired hearts.

Lately, the list could go on and on. So many encouraging words. Hugs so full of love I never want to let go. Text messages that are always on time. Invites to stop by and spend time with friends. Genuine care from genuine friends and family.

So, I guess what I want to say is that there are so many people around us every day who need attention. Just like my youngest son noticed, we also see others and notice. Act on the prompting to be a blessing to someone else. It’s as simple as a text or a cup of coffee. Like so many have done for me this week, stop and take time to give others the much needed attention that only you can give.
