My family doesn’t visit beaches on Spring Break, we visit the bays. While others flood to the sandy shores of West and South Florida, my family hooks to our boat, loads up the fishing poles, and gets ready for peaceful casting and fried fish suppers.
We arrived Friday afternoon at our home away from home. Excited, we raced to the dock to check out the fishing situation. We were met with windy conditions and no luck in the edible fish department. Saturday it was windy and rainy. Sunday, just the same. Our five days of fishing wasn’t going as planned.
But in between the attempts to fight the wind and rain, I found something else that I needed more than fishing. Rest. Quiet moments reading and napping on the screened porch. Snoozes and rest on the couch with family. Game time and meals with laughter and memories shared. Little responsibility. No laundry. No schedule. Just rest.
The next few days produced better conditions for fishing, but even more so, they afforded more time for rest. Regrouping. Refreshment.
As much as I hoped for fish, my body longed for rest. And without even meaning to, I landed smack dab in the middle of it.
Like me, have you been looking and hoping for “fish”? Maybe there’s something else you need a lot more. Rest. Take a moment and give in. I’m so glad I did.
