Our lesson in Bible study this morning focused on the place that Samuel named Ebenezer. The Israelites were no longer self-seeking and looking to God as a magic genie to rescue them from their enemies. They humbly came to Samuel, asked for help, and followed God. They gave up their idols willingly and confessed their shortcomings as a whole group.
The Philistines heard of this gathering and ambushed the Israelites. But God. He caused confusion to fill the ranks of the Philistines, and the Israelites swooped in for a victory. This amazing defeat is why Samuel named the place Ebenezer—the stone of help.
Lately, I’ve been distracted by the busyness of life. Everything seems to be moving too fast for my emotions to catch up. Then stress, anxiety, and fear sneak in and derail my mind causing my focus to shift to what is right in front of me.
I forget all the goodness. I forget all the times God showed up. And I forget to count my blessings.
That’s why we need to recall those personal ebenezers. Those moments where God showed up in a mighty way. When our back was against the wall and he moved all the pieces together right on time.
When the distractions come and hard circumstances blind our view, we think about those ebenezers. We replay the good moments and remind ourselves of the victories. One at a time, we slowly gain our true vision. And with open eyes, we can see far enough ahead to gain our focus and determination once again.
What are your ebenezers?
Think about them this week and remember how faithful God really is. I’d love for you to share those moments with me as well.
I have a leather basket on the front door entry table that is filled with short notes of gratitude, miracles , and ah moments. The front door table has a pen and ready slips of paper; so no excuses . When l get overwhelmed, as I often do , I go through the basket and “ see the goodness of God “ . The basket is my Ebenezer. The slips hold literal miracles that cause me to raise my eyes to the “ waymaker , promise keeper “.
Love this Christy!
I have always liked the part of the old hymn that says, “here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’ve come”
As always, Christy, this is a beautiful, thought-provoking piece.
