I settled on a link about hope and faith, and this sentence summed it up. “It[hope] gives us the ability to look at any situation and know that regardless of how it may appear God is going to come through.” (1)
Much of our world is missing this. Single mom working two jobs and still coming up short. Elderly folks choosing between food and medicine. Parents praying for their addict child living homeless on the streets. Adult children desperate for a normal interaction with narcissist parents. Kids dreading the bus ride knowing the bully is right behind them. Gang member going through the motions just to save face and his family’s life. Cancer patient receiving radiation knowing their days are numbered.
Circumstances leave us hopeless. Distractions leave us hopeless. This world leaves us hopeless. And too many of us believe that is where we have to stay.
What if all these people shifted their focus? What if they were suddenly able to see past the hurt, loss, lack, and brokenness? What if there was a place they could turn?
This week begins the traditional celebration of Advent. The first theme is Hope, and I think it’s rather fitting. Unless we shift our focus, hope doesn’t exist. We can’t have faith, or peace, or belief if there is no hope. Jesus is our hope. He came to show the world there is another way. He laid down his life for our sins. And he offered us a life of acceptance, forgiveness, and freedom if we will only believe.
Are you empty in the hope department? Spend some time seeking after the original Hope-Giver, Jesus Christ. Ask him to replace those glasses of doubt with glasses of hope. God will come through, if we choose to look for his solutions through the lenses of hope.
